How to Get Android Notifications on Your Computer Desktop (Mac, Linux or Windows)

Do you want to be notified of Android notifications like calls, text messages, low battery alerts and more when you're on your computer? An open source mobile application called "Android Notifier" does this by connecting your mobile phone's notification system to the notification system on your computer. The desktop application currently works on Mac only, via the popular notification app, Growl. The project's developer says the Linux port will arrive "soon" and he's looking for volunteers who will connect the app to Windows systems as well.

But he needn't bother. We came across another application called the "Android-Notifier-Desktop" which offers a multi-platform desktop client for the above mobile app to the overlooked Linux and Windows users.

Below is the complete installation guide to using both of these apps on your computer.

Sponsor

According to the project homepage, hosted here on Google Code, the "Android-Notifier" mobile application is useful for people who wear noise-cancelling headphones, keep their cell phone in their bags or don't want to be interrupted to look at vibrating phone while in a meeting.

The mobile app sends notifications to the computer it's connected to, including things like new text messages (both SMS and MMS), the phone number of the incoming call, battery status notifications, new voicemails and more.

The desktop app connects to the phone over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or, in the future, USB. The Bluetooth method is only supported on Android 2.0, however, due to restrictions in older Android versions. (To determine what version of Android you use now, go to Settings -> About Phone -> Firmware version.)

How to Install and Use the Notifier App

To get started with this app, do the following:

Bluetooth Method

  1. Install and run the Android app from the Android Market. (You can scan this barcode to find it).
  2. Install and run the Desktop app for your OS from the Downloads section.
  3. Ensure your Android device is paired with your desktop (Settings > Wifi and networks > Bluetooth settings on Android)
  4. Enable the Bluetooth notification method on the Android app's settings (enabled by default)
  5. Open Bluetooth options in the Android app's settings:
    • Device pairing - select this to open Android's system bluetooth options, where you can pair your target device
    • Target device - once your device is paired, select this option to send notifications to a specific device. If this is set to "Any device" (the default), the notifications will be sent to the first computer device found
    • Auto-enable bluetooth - if enabled, notifications can be sent over bluetooth even if you keep it disabled - every time the app needs to send a notification, it enables it, sends the notification, then disables it again. The downside of this option is that it can take multiple seconds for the notification to actually be sent.
  6. Enable the Bluetooth notification method on the desktop app's settings (enabled by default)
  7. The desktop app will listen to and start displaying events from the Android app.
  8. You can now exit the Android app - the notifications service will be running in the background by default.

Wi-Fi Method

  1. Install and run the Android app from the Android Market. (You can scan this barcode to find it).
  2. Install and run the Desktop app for your OS from the Downloads section.
  3. Ensure both the desktop and the device are on the same network.
  4. If you have a firewall on your desktop, ensure it will allow incoming UDP packets on port 10600
  5. Enable the Wi-Fi notification method on the Android app's settings (enabled by default)
  6. Open the Wi-Fi options in the Android app's settings
    • Target IP address - this is the IP address notifications will be sent to. While the default (global broadcast) is sufficient for most cases, you may want one of the following options instead:
      • Global broadcast - sends notifications to 255.255.255.255 (should work on most networks);
      • DHCP broadcast - detects the DHCP configuration of your current Wi-Fi network and uses its broadcast address for sending notifications. If no DHCP information is set (e.g. you're using a static IP), the notifications won't be sent;
      • Custom address - allows you to type in a specific IP address to send notifications to (doesn't need to be a broadcast address). This is useful if your network doesn't allow broadcast packets, or you want to prevent others in the network from receiving your notifications.
    • Wi-Fi sleep policy - this is a system setting from Android which controls when the Wi-Fi will be turned off. By default, it's turned off whenever the screen is turned off - if you want to get notifications when the screen is off, you probably want to change this default to either "never when plugged" or "never" - these options will consume a little more battery, but will ensure notifications are always delivered
    • Auto-enable Wi-Fi - if you do not wish to keep your Wi-Fi on all the time with the above option, and can tolerate notifications being delayed by a few seconds, then this option will make Wi-Fi be turned on whenever a notification needs to be sent, and then turned off again after it's been sent. The extra delay introduced is the time it takes for your phone to join a network.
  7. Enable the Wi-Fi notification method on the desktop app's settings (enabled by default)
  8. The desktop app will listen to and start displaying events from the Android app.
  9. You can now exit the Android app - the notifications service will be running in the background by default.

Windows, Linux Users: Get This App Too

Because of the popularity of the original application, many users wanted Linux or Windows support. Unfortunately, the original project was not offering these options - it was Mac-only. Another developer released a second program that enables multi-platform support for not only Mac, but also Linux and Windows users (XP and up). It even has 32 and 64-bit options available for each of the supported operating systems.

To install this desktop app instead, head over to the downloads section and choose the appropriate version for your OS. Java 6 is also required.

Another Option for Windows Users

Another option for Windows users is a bit of hack. A third developer created a simple Windows application here that uses the Microsoft Winsock component. You just place this MSWINSCK.OCX file in your C:\Widnows\System 32 folder in order to use it. On your Android phone, you'll need to connect to your wireless network, choose a custom IP and key in the IP of the machine using the program. The program supports PING (testing connection packets), SMS and RING (calls) only.

Do you know of any other programs that do the same? Let us know in the comments.

LG will ship Android phones powered by dual-core CPUs in Q4

Shared by Pedro Loureiro
Hoje tinha pensado: para quando dual core? Hoje li a resposta :)

Just hours before Samsung introduced its new Orion processor powerhouse yesterday, LG announced that it will ship Android phones with dual-core CPUs in Q4 this year. LG has teamed up with NVIDIA and the upcoming devices will be part of LG’s Optimus series and feature the system-on-a-chip Tegra 2.

I have always had a soft-spot for NVIDIA’s Tegra processor, but so far it has had a hard time finding its way to the market – that will finally change this fall. The Tegra 2 sports a dual-core 1GHz CPU, a 1080p HD mobile video processor and an ultra low-power GeForce GPU. According to LG, we can expect up to 2 times faster web browsing and 5 times faster graphics performance over single core 1GHz processors. That’s roughly the same speed increase that Samsung claims the Orion will bring, and it will be a battle of the titans when these two state-of-the-art processors go head-to-head in a few months.

Both LG and NVIDIA say that the Tegra 2 will offer “console-quality gaming”, which definitely shouldn’t be an overstatement. Hopefully big-time game developers such as EA and id Software finally will realize the vast gaming potential of the Android platform once Tegra 2 and Orion powered devices start shipping. I personally can’t wait to see 3-D titles that take full advantage of these new chips.

Another Android device featuring the Tegra 2 that soon will be released is the tablet StreamTV Elocity A7, which should be available in October.

New Gran Turismo 5 Damage Model in Best Buy Demo

At first glance, it appeared the GT5 demo popping up in Best Buy stores around the United States – while certainly exciting – did not reveal any new features or content. Now that more users in our forums are getting their hands on it, however, it seems that is definitely not the case. Collisions reveal dramatic and impressive new car damage modeling – I’ll let these screenshots by GTPlanet user Asane and gamer28 speak for themselves.

Self-Referential Aptitude Test

Self-Referential Aptitude Test

by Jim Propp (propp@math.mit.edu)

A few years ago I wrote a "Self-Referential Aptitude Test" as part of a longer chain of puzzles. Since this puzzle seems to have taken on a life of its own and has been spreading around various parts of the 'net, I figure I might as well post it to silent-tristero before someone else does. Feel free to pass it on (with attribution).

The solution to the puzzle is unique, and in some cases the knowledge that the solution is unique can actually give you a short-cut to finding the answer to a particular question, but it's possible to find the unique solution even without making use of the fact that the solution is unique. (Thanks to Andy Latto for bringing this subtlety to my attention.)

I should mention that if you don't agree with me about the answer to #20, you will get a different solution to the puzzle than the one I had in mind. But I should also mention that if you don't agree with me about the answer to #20, you are just plain wrong. :-)

How To Spot Scams and Malware Apps on Android - Tested

ndroid offers developers a lot of freedom in using a phone's hardware in their apps. While this leads to some really amazing functionality, it can also be a security concern. Google has chosen to run a more open marketplace for apps, and does not hold content up so they can review it first. There is no gatekeeper for the Android Market. All a developer needs to do is pay the $25 developer fee and upload their app to the Android Market. Naturally, this has invited some riffraff to join the party. By looking at an app with a skeptical eye, and checking the permissions, you can avoid apps that are shady, or just plain scams.

Head past the jump to find out.

The Market page tells you much

Your first line of defense is to just use common sense. If you're not familiar with an app, give everything a onceover before you install. Herein we'll use a real life example; an app that's managed to hit 10,000 downloads in just one week. The app in question, Android Gaming Network (AGN), is at least shady, but maybe an outright scam, and you can tell something is fishy just by looking at it.

Job one is to check the comments on an app to look for suspicious behavior. The wisdom of crowds is of real use in this instance. AGN, for instance, has over 200 Market reviews, most of them positive. If you look closer, you can tell something is wrong. Many of the reviews were clearly written by the same person. They have the same grammar and say mostly the same things. This is a big red flag for any app. In fact, in this app's comments, there are some real people offering words of warning. This free app charges you $10 a month if you're not careful.

The market has the option to pull up the other apps submitted by a particular developer. Make sure to look at these apps if you're feeling uneasy. It could be that they develop a well known app, and that can certainly put your mind at ease. It could also be that they develop several other questionable-looking apps. This is information you should have when evaluating an app.

The Android Market offers a link to the website registered by the developer. If you're feeling weary after looking at the Market comments and other apps, this is the next place to checkout. You can tell a lot about a developer from their site. If it looks like a storefront genuinely meant to promote mobile applications, that's a good thing. A completely unrelated site is not as good. The developer of AGN has a site listed, but when you go there, it's just a blank page with the URL. This isn't what you want to see.

A developer of reliable apps will want to put their best foot forward. Having a Twitter account is a good way to stay in touch with users. The developer's website should be able to direct you to their Twitter account. Not having a Twitter account is not necessarily a sign of trouble, but if you cannot find a real website, or a twitter account, that is a concern. A developer with no real presence online is suspicious.

Check the app permissions

A Twitter client just needs a few permissions
A Twitter client just needs a few permissions
This is perhaps the most important thing to do when you're unsure about an app. Android makes developers register system permissions for their apps to interact with the phone. By going down the list, you can tell what an app is going to do. Depending on the type of app, some permissions may stick out like a sore thumb. First, you have to know which permissions to look out for.

Right under the heading Services that cost you money, you may see the "send SMS" or "send MMS" permission. Most apps don't need the ability to send SMS messages. If you're looking at a game, news, or entertainment app of some sort, it more than likely shouldn't need these permissions. Sending SMS messages to premium rate numbers is a way to charge users surreptitiously, and we think that is how the developer of AGN is doing it. Bottom line, if an app is unexpectedly asking for SMS permissions, be skeptical.

Next up, look for the Storage header. The subcategory to be aware of here is "modify/delete SD card contents". This permission gives apps full read write access to you SD card. This includes access to your pictures, music, and videos. If you look around in your app permissions, you'll likely notice that many apps actually request this. They often need SD access to store cache, or some sort of downloadable data within the app. Even though it is common, if an app seems shady and wants SD access, you might want to think twice.

Another permission to watch out for is "read phone state and identity", which you will find under Phone calls. In this context, state means whether or not the phone is placing a call. There are perfectly reasonable circumstances that an app might want to know if you are on a call or not, but this permission also gives access to the unique identifiers of your phone. This includes the IMEI, IMSI, and Google identifier numbers of your handset. This could allow an unscrupulous individual to clone your phone.

The "full internet access" permission under Network communication is probably the most important permission an app can request. As the name implies, an app with this permission can load any URL and send data at will. The problem is that almost all apps request it. Games that send high score data, for instance, need this permission. Any app that pulls in online content would use it as well. Still, use your best judgment and decide if an app should have this privilege on your phone. There might be time you just don't want to risk it should you already feel uneasy about an app.

An automation app like Tasker needs more permissions
An automation app like Tasker needs more permissions
Lastly, check for the Your location section, and see if the app asks for either fine (GPS), or coarse (network-based) locations. Many apps ask for coarse location access, and this is maybe a little off-putting, but not the end of the world. Coarse cell network locations are usually off by a few blocks. Some developers use this to know what general vicinity their users are in. Still, if you value your privacy, you don't need to install these apps if you can't think of a valid reason for it to track you.

The fine GPS location, on the other hand, is more concerning. This permission allows an app to use the GPS ship to know exactly where you are. Unless you're looking at an app that does some sort of location aware searching, or location sharing, this is a red flag. There are very few instances when an app needs to know exactly where you are.

The vast majority of apps in the Android Market are on the up and up. We're not implying that you need to scrutinize all of them this thoroughly. However, if you're not familiar with an app, and something looks suspicious, don't be afraid to investigate before you install it. By looking into AGN a bit, we found the Market comments claiming premium SMS charges, that the developer website was blank, and that it was asking for strange permissions. It also looks like this developer did much the same thing last week under a different name. Those apps have been removed.

Keeping an eye on the permission of apps you have installed can also be of use, as it will help you better understand what uses the permissions have. To view an app's security information, go to its Market page, and hit menu > security. Currently installed apps also list their permissions in the Manage Applications Settings area as well. Follow these simple best practices, and you should be able to avoid scams and malware on Android with no problem.

The World's Most Profitable Companies

Where in the world are the most profitable companies and exactly how much money are they raking in? In 2008, the most profitable public company on the planet made enough profits to give every American citizen $146.81. Those same profits could have bought each child on the planet $45 worth of holiday gifts. However, that didn’t happen and for most of the top companies, profits in 2009 will not come anywhere close to that level.

Websites for scifi's most famous evil corporations, based on real-life corporate websites

The best science fiction movies are only as good as the evil corporations they feature. But what sort of websites would Weyland-Yutani or OCP have? Artist Mikko Vartio imagines their websites, with a noticeable resemblance to some real-life corporate sites.

I like evil movie corporations, and for a long time I've wanted to do a case-study of their corporate imagery. The more I looked into it, the more it seemed as though these suckers make a fine match with some real-world evil corporations. I took my Adobe Fireworks, locked myself into bunker and reverse-engineered from scratch these six detailed lookalike-mashups of evil corporations.

This post by Mikko Vartio originally appeared at Vart.Io.

Websites for scifi's most famous evil corporations, based on real-life corporate websitesOCP meets Apple.

OCP is the nasty corporation from Robocop. My vision of OCP's site has some noticeable resemblance to Apple's, but that is purely a coincidence.

Websites for scifi's most famous evil corporations, based on real-life corporate websitesRekall meets RyanAir.

Paul Verhoeven directed Robocop, but he also directed another masterpiece, called Total Recall. The evil company Rekall specializes in screwing up your brain with false memories and pseudo tourism — stuff like travelling to Mars. Here's a Rekall website modeled on travel company RyanAir's.

Websites for scifi's most famous evil corporations, based on real-life corporate websitesWeyland-Yutani meets Toyota.

Weyland-Yutani should ring a bell, from the Alien movies. Here's a Weyland-Yutani site in the style of Toyota's.

Websites for scifi's most famous evil corporations, based on real-life corporate websitesSkynet meets Bing.

Skynet has been sending robots from the future, since The Terminator. Everybody thinks that Google is the new real-life Skynet, but I'd argue the stealthy search engine Bing from Microsoft is the real evil A.I. (Plus doing a Skynet logo with Google-colors would be way too easy).

Websites for scifi's most famous evil corporations, based on real-life corporate websitesCyberdyne meets Microsoft.

When there is Skynet, there is also Cyberdyne. So here's a Cyberdyne site in the style of Microsoft's home page.

Websites for scifi's most famous evil corporations, based on real-life corporate websitesTyrell meets RealDoll.

Blade Runner is a classic movie, where Han Solo shoots robots. While the evil corporation Tyrell produces too-realistic Replicants, our real-world equivalent RealDoll (website is NSFW) does the same with evil sexdolls.

Ikea Started Selling Second Hand Furniture Online

Ikea Started Selling Second Hand Furniture Online

Shoppers eager to nab discounted furniture at cut-rate prices may soon be able to bypass Craigslist and head straight to the mother ship of cheap home furnishings: IKEA. A few days ago on August 28, the Swedish furniture company started selling second-hand Ikea products online in Sweden and they intend to extend this idea to other foreign outlets. Here is what Peter Agnefäll, CEO of IKEA Sweden told the daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter about this innitiative : “It is about taking an environmental responsibility for how our products are used in the longer term and making it easier for our customers to do their part for their responsibility towards the environment.” We can say that this is a nice step toward sustainability, but in the same time we’re wondering about the quality of the pieces that will be sold. Finally would you buy second-hand furniture from IKEA ? And what do you think about this idea ? – Via - Time

norster 600r

the norster 600r is a finnish designed mid engine car that has a compact size that actually puts it into the category of
a heavy quad. the car is a throwback to old english cars such as austin-healey’s sprite. the unique styling is perhaps
one of the car’s most unusual features, especially with the vertical opening doors. the car has a 580cc two-cylinder
engine with only 20 horsepower and 36.8 pound-feet of torque. while this limits the car’s driving at high speeds,
it allows the engine to achieve around 50 miles to one gallon of gas.

BonBon Buttons

These are way above and beyond the level of any other “CSS3 buttons” I’ve seen. Multiple backgrounds combining gradients and images, uneven border-radius, pseudo elements, HSL coloring, @font-face icons, transitions, box shadows, text shadows, hover and active states… the list goes on. Every trick in the book masterfully employed.

They make my button maker look dull and flat.

Las Vegas carpets offensively designed to keep your eyes off the floor?

These days there are high-end hotels in Las Vegas that will sell you new versions of the luxurious sheets, pillows, and even toiletries that they stock their rooms with. But the casinos on their ground floors are a different story; no one wants to furnish their house with the gaudy trappings surrounding a roulette table.

Uma caixa de seis CD e um DVD com a obra completa dos Orange Juice chegará ao mercado em inícios de Novembro. Com o título Coals To Newcastle, a caixa junta 16 faixas inéditas ao catálogo completo do grupo, acrescentando ainda os telediscos de Rip It Up e What Presence?, além de actuações no programa televisivo The Old Grey Whistle Test.
